In the 18th century, William Beckfrod left England to avoid a gay scandal and headed to... Portugal! Centuries later, the country's warm and welcoming capital, Lisbon is fighting to break free from the oppressive, conservative Catholic chains. And boy, it is putting up quite the fight.

Still, discretion is the name of the game. Most bars around the residential Principe Real area have you ring a doorbell to get in. The saunas are not just for the out, proud and kinky - but for the closet-cases still around. And the only gay B&B refuses to publish their exact location to secure the privacy of their guests.
